Prior to the Sword Art Online incident, Oshiro Masa and Kikuchi Taiki were roommates who were entering their second year in their local high school, and the two of them were best friends. However, they actually thought of each other more as brothers than best friends because they considered the other to be the closest thing they ever had to family throughout their lives. While Masa and Taiki lacked any blood relation, they had grown up together in the same orphanage after the deaths of their parents.
Both Masa and Taiki share the love of the classic Japanese film, Seven Samurai, and its loose anime adaptation Samurai Seven. The influence the movie had on them transferred to whenever they played video games. Oshiro Masa would go by the name Gorobei because he liked the fact the Gorobei in the movie was a skilled archer while also having talent in close range combat. Masa also liked how Gorobei was the second in command of Kambei’s group, and he hoped that he could become a high ranking and respected member of his archery club.
Masa was one of the 1,000 Beta Testers, and he used his experience with the Beta Test to convince Kikuchi to purchase a copy of Sword Art Online, so they could play together. Masa planned on teaching Kikuchi all the ropes for playing the game, but he did not expect the circumstances to be quite as intense and life threatening as this. His number one priority is to make sure both of them become skilled and strong enough to survive.
In Sword Art Online, Masa is known as Gorobei, and he specializes in using the skill known as 'Bow and Arrow' as his primary method of fighting. While he is capable of using other methods of combat, he prefers to utilize archery because he feels that is more his calling. He also finds it to be the most fun way to fight in the game.
